In the security industry, where echoes of tradition and conformity are often deafening, my journey stands as a testament to the power of resilience, strategic innovation, and a touch of rebellion against the status quo. Growing up in a home where the air was often thick with tension, I learned early on that to navigate the world safely, I needed to understand it deeply—more deeply, perhaps, than those who never had to question their place in it.

This understanding was both a shield and a compass as I ventured into the military, stepping into the role of a cop in the Air Force. Here, surrounded by rigid hierarchies and a culture that often equated loudness with leadership, I found my early lessons in vigilance and strategy to be invaluable. Yet, it was clear that the traditional mold of leadership was not one I was meant to fit. Instead of conforming, I carved my own path, using empathy and insight as my guide—traits that were often overlooked but incredibly effective.

Transitioning later into corporate security at AWS, I faced a similar landscape, dominated by the same archetypal figures and attitudes I had come to know well. But this time, I was better equipped, not just with experience but with a firm resolve to lead differently. It was not about being the loudest in the room or the most visibly commanding; it was about being the most thoughtful, the most perceptive—the leader who could not only foresee potential issues but could also foster an environment where every voice was heard and valued.

This approach, grounded in understanding and respect, slowly began to reshape the dynamics around me. Colleagues who were used to a more confrontational style began to see the benefits of a more inclusive approach. Successes under my leadership did not come through force but through foresight and cooperation, proving time and again that strength does not have to be aggressive to be effective.

Now, reflecting on my path through the shadows of a traditionally male-dominated field, I see my journey not just as a series of personal achievements but as a broader shift towards more humane and intelligent leadership in security. By staying true to my values and by consistently applying the lessons of my past, I’ve not only navigated but also transformed the landscapes I’ve inhabited. This story, my story, is a reminder that breaking the mold is not just possible—it’s necessary for those who find that the traditional paths do not accommodate their stride.

Sharing this is more than recounting a personal history; it’s about lighting a path for others who might think their differences are barriers to leadership. In the security industry, as in many others, there is room for a diversity of styles and approaches. The most enduring security comes not from imposing silence but from understanding and addressing the underlying currents that define our environments. And sometimes, the best way to do this is not by fitting into the old ways but by defining new ones that honor who we are and what we bring to the table.
